6 week - 3 month study trip? - 05-30-2011, 05:50 PM

Hey guys.

A friend of mine just got back from Osaka, and I've been offered a sort of 'deal' if you like, one that he's just partaken in.

He helped out at an animal shelter by doing dog walking, and in return was given free accommodation. I'd love to be able to study my Japanese cheaply, but of course, in Japan. It sounded like a good study opportunity

What I'd like to know, is it legal? Would that be considered work and breaking the terms of a tourist visa?

As far as I know, a tourist visa is only good for 90 days. There are other sort of working visa that you can look into, but you can't just fly in and stay there for more than 90.

They can deport you if you are caught...

Three months is ~90 days.

Yeah. I would never extend my stay without a proper visa.

I'm also a UK citizen so I'm allowed 6 months. But I don't plannon staying so long.

I just want to know if dog walking in return for accommodation would be legal or not.
