Question - 05-14-2007, 03:37 PM

I am traveling to Japan next April and I was wondering about legal ages to do certain things. I've heard that smoking on the street is illegal but they have "Smoker's Salon" randomly on the street. I also know that you can buy alcohol from [few] vending machines, but what is the legal drinking age in Japan? Thank you guys so much

If everyone loved and nobody lied,
If everyone shared and swallowed their pride,
Then we'd see the day when nobody died.

I don't know about smoking age limit...but I will tell you I saw many people (mostly girls) smoking in Jr high uniforms....

As for drinking age in Japan...it's 20, but Westerners tend to look older to the Japanese...cough...

The legal age for smoking & drinking alcohol is 20
but the laws are lax.
It's only illegal to smoke on the streets in some places in Japan but don't do it anyway it's really gross for the non smoker walking behind you.

I really wish that is the case, so that I can breath easily Smoking while walking is basically not illegal. But if you are already on train platform, there is a designated smoking area. Most if not all restaurant and cafe have smoking area, so if you smoke after eating, you can always go the are where smoking is allowed.

Oooh well .. I'm not sure if it's a good thing for a westerner to look "older" but as for the smoking and the concerned person above, I would NEVER disrespect Japan by like smoking in all the american movies and just chucking my ciggerettes over such a beautiful place. Was just curious thank you =D

Yeah, in truth, it may be wise to avoid both in a foreign country, especially drinking. One must remember that if they like it or not, while traveling, you are a diplomat of sorts representing your country.

Though, smoking may not be somthing that has a big chance of getting you in trouble...it's just not a good habbit to get into.

One concern for smoking is holding your cigarette too low, as in the level of children's heads. You may scorch an eyeball.
