I never take taxis unless 1) someone else is paying or 2) I have three others to split the fare. In Beijing I used to hire a driver for the day for the same price a fifteen minute ride in Japan will cost.

Whenever I have holidays in other countries, my first interest is to know the country and the people. I live in Germany. If german people go to Greece, Italy or other South European countries they often do this for relaxing without any knowledge of the language. We also went many times to Greece, but it was very important to know also the language, although that language is not such an easy language, because we visited also small villages and many places more in the countryside of Greece and there the people couldn't speak English.

And so it would be the same when I go to Japan. I never would go there without knowledge of Japanese. It needn't be fluent, but it should be as good as possible.
