Question Quick trip from Tokyo...to other cities ? - 06-20-2007, 01:31 PM

Hi there,
here is I think a topic that a lot of people travelling to Japan may find interesting.

Staying one month in Tokyo, I was thinking about making some "side" trips.
Which cities or town, not too far from tokyo (let's say max 3.30 hours from the capital) are worthfull to visit ?

Fang.

Osaka and Nagoya are both closeby! Three and half hours gets you quite far on the Shinkansen, so you have quite a few options. I'm sure some other users will have better advice.

i think the trip to Kyoto takes about 3 hours on the buller train, well worth a visit! altough you cant do it in a day, i was there for about a week, enjoyed every second of it!
hiroshima (mable further than 3 hours, nearer 5-6 i think,) on the other hand can be done in a day im sorry to say

North of Tokyo, you could go to Nikko, (about an hour away i think) they have golden roofed temples up there and its a beautiful place to be

I agree Niko is fantastic. You could also go to Hakone, very beautiful during sakura season. Kusatsu is great if you like skiing. Hiroshima was one of my fave trips. Kanazawa is beautiful but maybe a bit far.

Nikko is a good choice as mentioned by the earlier posters.
Others near tokyo sites that you may want to check it out includes:
- Kamakura [statue giant buddha and surrounding temples]
- Chinatown [near Yokohama]

Chinatown is not that great especially if you've actually been to China. It is nothing but a bunch of overpriced Chinese restaurants and grocery stores.

But Yokohama is fairly nice.

And the Chinese food is I felt sick for about 2 hours after eating there! They don't have the Chinese food we are used too, it is more real.

You are about three hours from Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe. A little farther out you can get to Nara, which is one of my favorite cities in Japan.

A month in Tokyo is a long time, but travelling by bullet train is expensive. (though with that length of time it might be worth investing in a Japan Rail Pass)
