Kyoto to Hiroshima (day trip) - 08-05-2009, 10:12 AM

Hi Guys,

I will be in Japan within 2 months (for 8 days). I will be spending the whole time in the Kansai region (based in Kyoto)…but I am keen on taking a day trip to Hiroshima. The catch is…I will not have a JR PASS that allows me to take the necessary trains to get there and come back.
I am planning to buy the JR Kansai pass + Kansai thru pass (to be used in different days) – I can not go any further than Himeji.
Do you guys have suggestions on how to get to Hiroshima without taking the bullet train? What I mean is…a cost effective solution (bus to be excluded…takes a lot of time). Are there any other trains connecting Kyoto to Hiroshima? Prices, schedules and suggestions are welcomed.

Thanks in advance!

I did a quick search through Hyperdia, taking local trains or limited express from Himeji to Hiroshima will takes about 10 hours

The short answer is: no. I tried to do this about a month ago. Gave up and just used the bullet train. If you want to daytrip to Hiroshima from Kyoto, the only way to do it is by shink. Sorry.

There are plenty of trains that go between the 2 cities, but they take many hours to make the trip, each way. The only way to do it as a day trip is the bullet train.

We did it.. We drove in a rent-a-car.. Wasn't that far..

We actually drove to Kumamoto from Kyoto, having hotel breaks along the way, then returning driving back to Kyoto..

All great fun and memories..

Rent-a-car may not cost that much more.. Definitely worth the extra mile for the added convenience..

Cheers - Oz
