I would budget

$1000.00 for the flight
$200.00 a night for lodging
$20.00 a day for lunch and snacks
$30.00 a day for dinner
(if you just stay in Tokyo) $25.00 a day for train travel
$100.00 a day for cool stuff you want to buy
$40.00 a day for entrance fees to museums, or amusement parks

Good prices to give him (or her) a general idea~ Though to give it a range on a few things:

$100-$200.00 a night for lodging (unless you find a cheap hostel/gueshouse/hotel)
$20.00 a day for lunch and snacks (give or take a few bucks. Just depends on how much you eat around that time and between breakfast and dinner)
$5-$30.00 a day for dinner (McD's or a fancy restraunt, haha. Just depends on where you eat)

Oh! And if you're going to Tokyo, bring at least $60.. it cost me $30 each way. I think there was a cheaper way, but I couldn't find it v_v
