Same, I wonder this, too. . .

I would like to become a mangaka one day. Although I don't think my art is all that good as of yet (My DeviantART page is in my sig :S ). . . My parents probably don't support me that much to become an artist (They don't know much about what I like), so it's kinda a hard situation for me. . . I'm still not sure if I can become a mangaka because the process of getting there harder than it looks when you think about it, but hey, that is like with every job. . . Isn't it??

-Sighs- If not a mangka, then at least an illustrator, like a free-lancer or something lulz. I need to learn more about business. e_e"

Id love to be able to draw as well as pro manga artists, it's amazing what they do! Im not sure if I could ever draw for a living tho', so much pressure and I can never draw a character more than once..... I reckon I might just keep drawing for myself, but a professional manga artist.... *sigh* That's one of the dreams xD

I would love to be a manga/comic artist. I think i would be a comic artist cause i live in America and so such things. I'm proficient at drawing, but have a lot of trouble with writing and story telling.

You guys might enjoy this. It is a comic artist tracing 100 different styles of manga "eyes" which goes to show, there are as many styles in manga as there are artists.

I also had this dream once. Actually it isn't impossible, I think, to be a mangaka when you are a foreigner, but the most important thing, of course is your capacity, if you are a genius then it might be possible if no it may be hard (isn't it obvious?).
First, you need to know that although it's hard to become a professional, the manga market is open in Japan and it gives so many chances for the beginners; there's two common ways to become a mangaka in Japan:
The first one is called motikomi and it's the most difficult. Call for a publisher and make an appointment, don't show to him/her your illustrations they're only concerned about a manga so don't waste their time. He/she doesn't ask for your opinion it is you that want to know theirs. It's hard to be called in the first motikomi and the big mistake of many people is that they don't try more than once.
The second way is the contests, you just need to follow the rules (each magazine have different rules), you don't need to be a master in everything, but at least good in tell the story or create great characters.
In both ways you need to follow the rules in the format of pages and in the cleaning of your work. I won't give all the details, because it'll take so much space and don't forget you NEED to speak Japanese and you need to find a way to stay in Japan during the process.
Also, there's an underground manga event in Japan called Comic Market (aka "comiketo"), that allows newbie artists to show up easily sometimes, there's a whole bunch of mangakas in Japan that refuses to work with the big publishers to keep their freedom in the creation of the stories, some of them earn a lot of money only selling their manga there. It's the biggest underground comic event in the world.
I think to work as a mangaka is completely different than be a comic artist in the States, because the market is very different, but I'll talk about it later.

Oh yes! - 07-08-2008, 09:23 PM

I wanted to be manga artist for the longest time.
I am currently trying to get major in computer graphics so we will be how that goes.. maybe I can use that to create my own manga.
The thing about manga that I find most important is the storyline which I suck at so I guess I will just draw some pretty pictures.

I kinda did and I might go to college in Japan but I'm more interesting in writing now. I still draw for enjoyment all the time.
