Artist Makes Japanese Calligraphy Using English Letters - 01-30-2007, 02:40 PM

Japanese calligraphy artist Kunishige Tomomi fuses kanji and English to create magic. "I want to create a revolution," Kunishige told the Mainichi during an interview.

She is creating her artistic "revolution" by using English letters instead of mere brush strokes to form her kanji. She calls her work "Eekanji," which has the double meaning of being "English Kanji" and also the Kansai dialect phrase meaning "pretty good."

When you first look at one of her art works, it appears to simply be stylized Japanese calligraphy. A closer inspection reveals that the English letters that make up the meaning of the kanji are hidden in the strokes of the calligraphy...
