Kabuki! - 07-25-2008, 09:59 PM

I like reading about kabuki theater plays, and once in awhile I'll watch parts that end up being posted online... most especially onnagata performances. Go on, show your love for Kabuki theater!

I've got a few YouTube links to some of Bando Tamasaburo's performances...

Sagi Musume II
Sagi Musume III

Feel free to share photos/illustrations/links. I'm always interested in seeing.

Exclamation Kabuki - 12-01-2008, 11:04 AM

I'm currently researching for my dissertation on Japanese performances and one of the subject areas is Kabuki (alongside other traditional styles) and it was suggested to me that I should try asking around forums for links to sites and information. So I would be very grateful if anyone could share a few sites or articles about this.

I'll be back later to watch those videos. Thank you.

That was one of my research projects in college, but before the help of the internet. Try doing searches on some of the actors you come across in your research, as opposed to the term kabuki or the play titles. It should provide more detail in the biographies than most of the historical data. Also search on Noh in conjunction with Kabuki. Though they are very different styles, I have seen a few writeups of comparisons.

One of my ex girlfriend's ex husband is one of the last Kabuki wig makers. Since she was still friends with him, he let me go and do a fitting on an actor and watch him make the wig. It was very interesting.

That sounds sound advice sir, I'll be sure to look into the actors I come across on my reading...

I am also researching noh and kyogen as well, but I'm choosing to leave out (unless I find a suitable overlap) bunranku as the performance is delivered by puppets which isn't what I'm after.
