Kashiri symbol? - 05-21-2009, 05:19 PM

I bought a new camera and just testing it a bit and took this picture of the kashiri(??) on my katana. And well, I haven't looked too close at it before and was wondering what it was. Anyone recognise anything?

I thought I saw a claw in there, but absolutely not sure. I guess it could also just be a bad "print".

I see what you are thinking are claws. But they don't seem to be clearly attached to paw. Maybe its my literal thinking, but I can't distinguish much of anything. Does the fuchi have a similar or correlating design?

BTW it is kashira in romanji.

Thank you for the correction on the name. Looked up some "katana anatomy" picture on google since I wasn't sure what it was called before. Anyway, here's a picture of the fuchi too if I'm not mistaken And I think the one on the kashira is just a little messed up.

Thanks for the help.

Yes, that shows the full design and I think the other has just been damaged over time. The 3-toed claw is much clearer and if they are original to the katana they should match in the general theme of the design. You can also see the the three discs in both pieces.
That's a nice dragon.
