lone fisherman: an old watercolor - 08-09-2010, 09:45 PM

Here's another picture, this time an original ink drawing/painting measuring 12 x 16 inches. It is an original, and I think nicely done, although I suspect it is more or less typical for its time and purpose. Still, I would like to know who did it and when, if anyone can help. Thanks.

gagouin, thus the pen name seal is on the left hand side, could you make a pic of this as well, i can see 山 over there, and one that resembles 涙 without sansui. that's in seal script, it will be entertaining. Those two pictographs of hands ( bottom right corner) stand for old form of 友. 2 hands together - friends.

Looks like 4 characters, which is weird, as pen names usually utilize 2.

Other pics.

注文藻 means: order of sea weed >.> <.<

鑑堂 lit. mean a temple of pattern, 堂 oznacza rowniez "magnificent"

鑑堂注文藻beats me: magnificent model (pattern) of (for) ordering sea weed?

道玄 is also a name (of publisher?) means way of mystery,or occult. Possibly a stamp of a person examining the pic, or librarian note.

雪最 this may be the last name of the person that painted it, kanji mean snow and i think the other one is 最, utmost, the most extreme.

山水 - lanscape of rivers and hills

ryuurui,
Thanks for the info. What is "gagouin"?
Here's a close-up of the seal:

oh, thats better, thanks.

Well, I don't have the large seal script dictionary, although I am certain of two characters:

山梧

then, lower left is either 戻 or 房

right bottom , i thought it is 友 as it's archaic form is two hands, however i cannot match this form on the seal to anyone i can find. It is possible it was flipped (turned on its axis) for seal purposes. Besides Great seal script is very flexible. Before the seal script unification in 221 B.C. by minister Li, there were basically no rules for righting in seal script. Also, not many of the forms were discovered.

I ll try to look a bit more, but it seems to me the text says: 梧友山戻(房), which is most likely a name. (reading top to bottom and right to left, just like a Japanese newspaper)

雅号印 gagouinn is a seal carved with artist pen name (雅号). It is usually made of 2 characters. In this case it may be a gagou plus a surname.

Edit: ok i think it is 竹 and not 友 、thus 梧竹山房 which in Chinese reads Wu zhu shan fang. Perhaps it is a Chinese author, or a title of series.
