Daibutsu - 04-21-2007, 08:33 AM

Now I've been to see the Big Buddha at Toudaiji in Nara twice now, and plan on once more before I head back to the States. All in all, it was quite impressive, the extensive grounds were great, and if nothing else the shear hugeness of the thing was a sight to behold. However, I have yet to compare it with the Kamakura Daibutsu (having never been to Kantou), but going by all the photos I've seen, the sculpting of the Kamakura colossus looks superior.

Can anyone who's been to both give me their impressions?

Of bodies chang'd to various forms, I sing:
Ye Gods, from whom these miracles did spring,
Inspire my numbers with coelestial heat;
'Till I my long laborious work compleat

I haven't seen Nara's, but Kamakura's is the second largest in Japan.

WOW!

That's an incredibly HUGE pair of sandals! I'm sure my whole body can fit in there! and possibly squeeze in one more person...

There are also several more Daibutsu in Japan

One is the standing Amitabha in Ushiku, Chiba-ken

Also in Kyushu ( Either Fukuoka or Miyazaki) there is a stone Medicine Buddha that overlooks the city, its also big.

Also there is another in a city famous for its bronze temple bells, forgot where.

I have been both myself, I feel the Nara one is very impressive but has that religious atmosphere and the history itself too, the Kamakura is big, but not as big as Nara, more like some of the big statues seen in China or large temples in some Asian countries. I guess the size of Nara was the influence of Tang China and in Asia where building a BIG Buddha statue was the fad.
