Kimono is the formal dress, usually made of hemp, wool, or silk brocade. Kimono has a lining and is worn over an "under-kimono".

Yukata is a light summer kimono made of cotton worn with no underwear. It is also a favorite dress at Ryokan when getting out of the onsen.

And now... PICTURE! ^_^

Awesome pictures. I'm making a kimono/yukata for halloween (it's partially lined, will be worn with an under kimono and made of cotton, so I don't know what to call it, if anything) and I'll post the results when I'm done. It's actually a very easy beginner's project (if you can find patterns), so its a good alternative to buying one.

I bet...I know there is like 5 layers to a traditional kimono.

Furisode front and back views. They are hi-rez so click the thumbnails and admire the beauty.
