Im lucky i have an actual Asian super market right around the corner from my house so i get fresh made noodles. The instant is ok if you just need a quick snack but damn are they bad for you all that sodium is not good plus they pretty much all taste the same. But hey at least its food.

Get the real stuff - 12-02-2008, 04:37 AM

The stuff you get at the grocery store, even if it's a Japanese/Asian grocery store, is not going to come close to matching the real deal. If you ever get to Japan, most ramen-ya make their own ramen, or at least make their ramen with fresh noodles.

Actually come to think of it, there are some pretty good ramen shops outside of Japan too. I've had some dang good ramen in Honolulu (Hawaii), and some decent ramen in Seattle as well. I'm sure you can find a good ramen shop in any major metropolitan city.

make it better - 12-02-2008, 05:29 AM

even with instant..that sick little flavor packet(that is mostly salt)is ok in a pinch..but with a bit of effort you can do better..fry up some green onions and garlic.throw in some leftover meat, add water and simmer..you're making your own broth(stock).then cook the noodles in the broth.it's all about the flavor.

But to despair was to wish back for something already lost.
Or to prolong what was already unbearable.

yeah you are right, they will never be the same as compared with an actual store, but it's all about how close they can get. i love the tonkotsu instant ramen @7-11 that has an actual piece of chashu in it...heavenly. We have ton's of ramen shops here, most of them however, are crap...there are a few decent and 1 great one (almost as good as japan)...which you'll pretty much always have to wait in line to get in to.
