American cravings in Japan - 02-27-2009, 08:25 AM

What kinds of things do Japanese people love that we have only here in the U.S.?? I want to bring over something different that they can't really find there, as omiyage.

Well, I don't know about Japanese people, but you can bring ME Taco Bell.

I can only get it on military bases.

Yes, Taco Bell.

Seriously. I know about 10 Japanese people who would KILL for some.

If anyone is trying to find me… Tamyuun on Instagram is probably the easiest.

I'm a lot luckier than my coworkers. Being former Navy (and maybe going back in, it's in the works), when friends come into Port... it's Taco Bell time.

They tried. Believe it or not, there just wasn't enough interest. So they went back to being on base only.

They tried too early, to be quite honest.
The attempt was back in the early 90s, I believe. Before anyone in Japan knew what a taco was, let alone had tried one. Add that to the fact that they tested the market with Japanese beef prices at the time (think 800 yen for a single taco), so it was out of reach for people who would have just tried one.
Now pretty much everyone knows, and taco spice sells quite well. Ground beef can also be imported at very low prices...But apparently one failure is too much, so they have no interest in trying again.
