Help me identify this food

I was in Japan for the summer of '92 and my host family took me to a pub. The Chef had a big vat of some sort of batter that he would dip skewers of meat or veggies and then deep fry. They were placed on a grate at the bar and you would eat until you were full. The last course was a battered banana. I think it was in Kobe.

Any ideas? What's this food called?

Thanks
Wildrose

No, it wasn't that. No panko or breading.

There was a barrel of batter (looked like pancake batter) that everything was dipped in.
