Question about Japanese Foods/Eating Habits - 08-21-2007, 09:11 PM

*sighs*

Here are some questions I want to know because I want to to know more about Japan and its diet.

Which Japanese foods are spicy?

Which Japanese foods are flatulent?

What can I do to be polite? What are impolite things to at a Japanese restuarant, bar, table, etc?

Are there any tips or additional things I need to know?

i know few things that you houdlnt do while eating in japan or infront of a japanese person:

-Don't poke food with the tip of your chopstick.
-Dont lick your chopstick tip.
-you should not point to other people with a chopstick.
-you should not eat directly from the main dish but take some of the food place them in your dish or bowl and then eat.
-dont make noises whle eating with a chopstick , like hitting them together and such.

That's all that came to my mind.

Table manners - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

They have all the information on it. But I still want to know about which type of Japanese foods are out there.

Japanese food doesn't tend to be "spicy" so much (I assume you mean burns the tongue). Wasabi is the only really spicy thing, you find it with sushi or cold noodles.

Flatulant? Probably sweet potatoes are the most flatulant.

Check out Housetek's thread on table manners, too. (I think it is in "Living in Japan")

^ what he said.

japanese food typically isn't spicy. if you find anything with curry in it, that's likely to be spicy...but japanese curry certainly isn't one of the hotter curries out there.

manners... well, I've heard that you shouldn't stick your chopsticks straight up in your rice (as it imitates incense), put them in a V form (also imitating incense), or cross them. just put them side-by-side. and I think this is a given anywhere - but don't drum with your chopsticks.

thnx boboloko for the sig!
