Japanese sake in decline, rejected by young people

Japanese sake, the traditional rice wine is in rapid decline, with just 1,450 sake breweries remaining of the 4,000 dotted across Japan at the height of its popularity in the 1960s.

"Young people think it's something that old men drink. And, demographically speaking, it is old men who drink sake in Japan," said John Gauntner, a sake industry consultant.

"For younger people, traditional drinks are not hip at all." said Shunsuke Kohiyama, export adviser for the Japan Sake Brewers' Association.

i think that younger people are just into what is "the fad" of the moment. they are not willing to try a variety of things.

i don't drink alcohol so i don't know much about it. but isn't sake a lot stronger than most drinks that youngsters drink? where i am. some of the japanese are afraid to drink whiskey or anything as strong as that,

Good Article, I like how it pointed out that Premium Sake and Saketinis are getting popular outside of Japan. Here in the West if you go to the store all you can find is the cheap generic Sake. If you want the good stuff, you have to order it online or through Wine specialty store. Though in some big cities there are places you can find Incredible Sake. Like San Francisco for example theres a store there with walls of Different Sakes. I happen to have an Aquired taste for Good Sake and enjoy it with certain meals. I usually save the Daiginjo for New Years Eve!

Well i tried sake about a year or 2 ago and it was strong if you want a quick fix but other than that "youngsters" like myself don't like it because its so plain, no "umph" to it, its just so boring. But for some strange reason it's starting to become more popular over here in New York???!!

sake isn't a stronger drink. being that i love to drink hard liquor, sake is more of a chilling drink when i don't really want to get drunk. that's probably why it's not as popular amongst the younger generation.
