Need A Bit of Help... -

I know this is going to seem odd, but I'm having trouble, still, with Katakana characters.
Whenever in my class, and we have to write out Katakana (we have a picture and the Hiragana beside it), I have a terrible time with it and usually end up writing in Hiragana without even realizing it when it was meant to be in Katakana. I have no idea what I can do to help me memorize the Katakana better. I've even memorized some Kanji that I found much easier than the Katakana. There are some Katakana characters that's easy to remember, but it's way less than the ones that I don't. When reading it, it's not as difficult, and it comes to me, but when told to write a certain character (that's not in my name), my mind blanks out, and I always have to look at my chart. Has anyone else ever had this problem? What can I do to fix it?

True. I associate many of them with the pictures, but the main thing you need is practise. Also, write out the katakana alphabet a few times. Stick a copy where you'll see it every day. Concentrate on 5 characters a day, basically re-learn it and it'll become easier. It isn't impossible! Good luck.
(Also, yes, I blank out too. Just practise :P)

i think it is natural to blank out once in a while because your mind might not be where it should be but if this is a common occurrence when you are using katakana then it is a problem.
i learnt katakana in 5 days i think it was, i did it in my lunch break at work. i just drilled 10 or so over and over and they stuck in there but for a while there i would draw blanks on ones like ヌ nu because i rarely saw it used. below is a nice long list of words written in katakana, learn this words and write them over as you learn them, then the characters will come to you faster. i think learning them in vocabulary is the best way to really grind them into your mind finally sorry about the double mentioning of katakana, it is the way i have it listed in my vocab program, this is a direct export from it  apparently my list was too long and it rejected it, so i cropped from タ down. damn smiley faces.. there should be a code option so no smiley faces come out.Quote:

I learned through absorption. If you know a word's pronunciation in English, and you start seeing the same character coming up with the same syllable (for instance ス is in super (スーパー).. maybe it'll just come to you.
After I got the recognition down, I just tried to write them all and got it down within 5 times of writing all the kana down. Maybe the same will work for you. However, if you're under a time constraint, definitely go with repitition. It works.
