kinyoubi - 04-05-2008, 12:16 AM

so in japanese the word for friday is kinyoubi, and sensei says that's because the kanji term "kin" means "money" or "gold" and was used because friday was normally payday. so that got me thinking, I've worked 7ish jobs, and not one of them had friday as the set payday, so I was wondering how many people actually get paid on friday. ...kinda weird, yes, but it intrests me...

I have a pretty strong feeling that your teacher is wrong.

In Japan, they teach that it`s derived from the same roots as "Friday" - the planet Venus. Venus in Japanese is Kinsei, hence the kinyoubi.

The other days of the week are also based on the planets, so I can`t imagine why Friday would be an exception.

If anyone is trying to find me… Tamyuun on Instagram is probably the easiest.

Nyororin is absolutely correct on this. I'm afraid your teacher is wrong.

金曜日 = Friday

金星 = Venus

Gettng paid on Fridays is an extremely rare practice in Japan. Most people get paid once a month, and it doesn't matter if you work full-time or part-time.

The kanji 金 does mean 'gold' when used all by itself. But that has nothing to do with the word 'Friday'.

Are you sure she's Japanese? That kind of an explanation won't really help you in the long run. If she explained the names of the week properly, you could also learn the names of the important stars simultaneously without an extra effort!

月曜日 = Monday

月 = Moon

火曜日 = Tuesday

火星 = Mars

etc...........

I knew that...the thing about the planets and the days of the week. I remember some very easily because of this, like say Suiyoubi and Suisei. Both have a connection to water since both have the kanji for water in it. Suiyoubi is Wednesday, isn't it? And Suisei is the planet Mercury. And Sailor Mercury's attacks are all water based. lol

It's ironic how I learned of small tidbits like this before even taking Japanese, and it's even more ironic how I learned of this stuff through Sailor Moon.

yes, I'm sure she's japanese...we're in the very beginning class, and she's trying to teach us in a way that's easy to remember-just the days of the week, we learn the rest bit by bit-and I know for a fact that if 90% of the class had to remember the association between planets and stuff for each day, we'd all panic...and friday was the only day she did that for. actually...she mostly used a song to teach it...
