hi - 09-26-2007, 04:59 AM

I just started working in a ramen shop and the manager speaks nothing but japaense. I pick up things here and there, but sometimes he speaks so fast my mind can't translate it that fast. I've been studying japanese for over 2 years but I'm nowhere near where I want to be. Is there a trick to it? Or is it just my nervousness?

Where is he from? You may not be familiar with his dialect. I have found that even though I am pretty good at Japanese, it sometimes takes me a little time to get used to someone I am not familiar with. They may say the exact same words as someone else, but when they say it it doesn't register correctly in my mind. I bet in a few weeks you'll have it down, though.

senaka = back (i.e. the back of your body)

[noun] ni kogoeta = frozen by [noun]

kogoeta comes from the verb kogoeru = to freeze (literally, like freeze to death)

That's probably closer... song lyrics are the worst.

That's always the hard part. First off, just relax and know that you'll only get a small bit at first. If you obsess too hard on what you "don't know," you're going to miss out on a lot of what you do know.

Many people new to "real" Japanese have a habit of obsessing on one unknown word in a conversation, and then they miss all of the rest.

So relax.

Try and make a habit of writing down one or two words you hear that you don't know, and then look them up later, but again, don't over-obsess when you're listening.

The most important advice I can give you is to narrow your focus. If you're working in a ramen shop, study words related to ramen, cooking, food, etc. since that's what 80% to 90% of that discussion is going to be. There will definitely be some good overlap into general Japanese, but focus first.

Also try to listen to live Japanese as much as you can.

At the risk of getting flamed, check out my blog (link is in my signature below)...a lot of native Japanese with scripts to help people pick out the individual words.

HTH.

Sumimasem. Nihongoga scoshi wakkadimas. Shinjuku eki wa doko desu ka?

Dunnow if I have spelled it right, but that's how it sounds, so that's how I spell it. See that's what people should do, coz you can spell a word, and it not sound antything like it. Like desu is pronounced des (at times) and desu at others? I think.

LEAVE ME ALONE!! I'VE ONLY BEEN LEARNING FOR A MONTH!!!

The sentence should say:

Excuse me. I understand a little japanese, do you know where Shinjuku staition is?

Sumimasem = Exuse me
Nihongo = japanese (as in the language, but when used in a sentence you add the "ga")
scoshi = a little
Wakkadimas = understand
Wakkadimas ka = understand? (as in "do you understand?")
Wakkadimasem = don't understand
Shinjuku = A region in Tokyo
eki = station
wa = this is added for, err Something I dunnow. Maby someone can help me out?
doko = where
desu = is (in this case)
Ka = ? (no other way to put it I'm afraid)

Well, that's about it. For now, mwuhahahaaa
se ya!
