OK, so I went out and got deathnote in Japanese, I never read, but always wanted to, it so I figured it would be good to practice translation. So, I was doin pretty well, but then I got stuck on the first page.

I found　つまらねー　I looked it up in the dictionary And the closest I found was つまらない, meaning dull. I was just wondering, is ne like a contracted or slang form of nai? I looked in some of my other references sources, but couldn't find it. I thought they wouldn't have it as it could have been slang. I do however feel that つまらない is accurate as I recall reading the first page a couple years ago and reading how everting was peaceful or boring, in hell or the daemon world, or wherever the beginning takes place. The ねー　part of つまらねー has nothing to do with contraction or slang. It's just the Kanto-style pronunciation of words ending in ない. Since Tokyo is part of Kanto, The Kanto-style speech often appears in Japanese dramas, manga, song lyrics, films, etc.

How often would kanto pose a minor confusion like this? are there any translations for kanto specifically?

You will get used to the Kanto speech in no time if you keep watching Japanese movies/dramas and anime. That is the dialect you will hear most often.

I'm not sure what your second question means. If you're asking if something like つまらねー means something else other than what the dictionary says the word　つまらない means, then the answer is negative.

I'm having a bit of trouble with a Kanji character.

戦

Now the problem is that it doesn't look exactly like the character in my book, but it's very close. The only part that doesn't match entirely is the 田 character there. It's not supposed to be four squares, but six of them.

I tried doing this on the site that MMM recommended, but I still can't figure out what to input to get the last two boxes. It's like you need to add two vertical lines for it to be what's written in my book that I'm trying to get through, or at least start.

Any suggestions?

My dictionary is showing me that 戦 and 戰 share the same meaning and readings.

Could it be the latter is just the old form, and the former is what is used now?

Edit: If its not the one that anrakushi pointed out, then I'm at a loss. The only other kanji I'm finding with the same radical （丈） look quite different from the one you posted.

Is it just me or are others also having difficulty showing the correct kanji for some words on this forum? For ごof the word ごかい (def: a misunderstanding), I keep getting 誤解...even when copy the correct kanji and paste it here...

Huh? You've got the right kanji for 誤解 there. Or am I not reading your post right?
