At first all I could say was...is that Japanese????
After looking at it for a long time I guess I figured out it is a vertical writing. The top should be on the right side, but I think it is a mirror effect. But it is very hard to see the kanji, maybe for a native it will be easier.

Maybe it is this way the picture?
The first kanji reminds me a little 事, but I am more for the nope than a yes.

It's definitely OLD. I can see elements of Japanese, but can't guess what it might mean. Maybe a native speaker/linguist can help.

Looks like someone faking kanji, especially with the goofy stars on each side.

On the other hand, this could also be true.

So either it is very authentic or very fake.

Funny. I'd put money on it being fake. Did the poster yet mention what the characters are on? If it's a sword, then I'd say definitely fake.

You guys are a terrific bunch. I do appreciate all of your comments and I'll try to give you more information.
The writing is on a sword blade (Katana) that was bought quite a few year ago in an "army supply" in Jakarta. I was on site at the time and this military surplus had all kind of equipments that are without any doubts original. I acquired a few of these swords on site and the seller can be trusted.
