There is no point in learning writing if you aren't learning pronunciation, and vice-versa.

not necessarily, learning the writing and the meaning would be helpful to some people, such as me, and learning the pronunciation and not the writing could be helpful to others,

but learn both,

That would be like learning just half the alphabet. OK, you can identify some letters, but it isn't going to do you much good unless you do both.

People make the mistake of thinking Japanese pronunciation is the same as English. It isn't. It is hard, and you should learn these things together.

And even when you learn it, still it is hard. Still drives me nuts the が that sounds like a な, all those vowels that have misleading pronunciations...and much more.
