Salmon sushi wa nihongo wo nan desu ka?

Translation: What is Salmon Sushi in Japanese?

I remember trying to order Salmon sushi and the waiter didn't know what I was saying although, they were Japanese.

サケ

or

サーモン

In the eastern half of the country (Tokyo included), you will hear シャケ more often than サケ. I myself say it サケ, though, as that's how I grew up saying it in Nagoya.

A little 'off topic' but in the thread title he used "nihongo wo nan desu ka" -- shouldn't it be "nihongo de nan desu ka", or both are good ??

I lived in Kanagawa with a woman from Hokkaido. She said シャケ, and I think all my classmates in Tokyo said シャケ as well.
