Lonely - 寂(さみ)しい、寂莫(せきばく)-たる (Written Only)
Solitude - 孤独(こどく)

Formal words are meant to be used in written language where as colloqiual language and slangs are meant to be spoken and never appropriate in a essay. Don't tell me your essay sounds like what you post on JF.

AlanX, you wouldn't say to a friend in English

Pardon me, but would you have the graciousness to answer my query?

No, you'd say

Dude, answer my question.

That's the difference between "written only" and "spoken only." They're not hard and fast rules, but probably should be termed "formal" and "regular."

I've never encountered a word that only may be written or spoken.

Edit: Well, I suppose 東京特許許可局 might be written but not spoken ;) wwwwww
