~たい question - 03-17-2009, 08:19 PM

If I'm using ~たい suffix as in 私はコーヒーをのみたいです how do I turn this into a negative as in "I do not want to drink coffee"?

I assume that it becomes たがっていません when you are talking about someone else, but I'm not sure about when I'm speaking of myself.

nomitai ja nai is wrong

Edit:
For ~たい it just changes like an い adjective

so for example:

飲みたい - want to drink
飲みたくない - dont want to drink
飲みたかった - wanted to drink
飲みたくなかった - didnt want to drink

Requests for help from users should be answered only by those who are 100% sure of the answer. If you are not sure of the answer you need to make that clear in your response. On the other hand, if you are not sure, you shouldn't be answering the question. Let someone who knows the answer respond and feel free to follow-up with additional questions if you have them.

Not every thread needs to turn into a bickering match, so please, show some decorum, people.

>私はコーヒーをのみたいです

As a grammar discussion, it is "私はコーヒーを飲みたくありません。" in negative.

However, if I am asked "コーヒーを飲みたいですか?", I would reply "いいえ、結構です。" or "いりません。".

飲みたくないです is certainly more commonly heard than 飲みたくありません.

飲みたくありません sounds more formal to me than 飲みたくないです, but I've never had much of an ear for subtle formality, so I could be wrong. It's likely just because everyone I know informally uses 飲みたくない, so that sense of plain-ness bleeds over in my perception of 飲みたくないです, while 飲みたくありません has no connotation to me.
