Further from what I wrote, there have been cases when the Japanese looked at a Chinese word, they found a corresponding Japanese word/words but they also took in the Chinese reading because the nuance is a little different.

Examples includes:
市場-いちば(small market)、シジョウ(large market/market in general)
明日-あした、あす、ミョウニチ (all mean tomorrow, but becomes more formal as you go from left to right)
一寸-ちょっと(A little, used in everyday speech)、イッスン(Could mean one sun [3.03cm] in length, which in turn can mean a little, but has much more restricted usage)
真面目-まじめ(serious)、シンメンモク(true form)

Thank you very much. So what the dictionary marks as same word actually has a difference in usage which can be a slight change in meaning or level of politeness. Now at least I know how to look at those dictionary definitions and not stare at them for 30 minutes wondering what is wrong with it

Thanx again.
