Most common words and phrases?
 

When going to any country, even if for a holiday, I always write down a list of words and phrases to get me by. Especially in Europe, a lot of the locals here will only speak English if you make the effort to at least try a word of their local language.

Although I'm studying for my JLPT, I'm also looking at Japanese on a more useful level. What are the Kanji, words and phrases you couldn't do without, use everyday or so, or feel a forigner should know?

Actually, I keep a picture of a flush toilet in my phone/camera. That's the easiest way to communicate any urgent needs regardless of the country I go to.. well, unless they only know squat toilet ;)
