However, it seems reasonable to assume that 予定することによって全体の姿が完成することでした。
might translate "It all went according to plan" without doing too much violence to the Japanese language. Of course, I neither know whether the Japanese sentence is valid, nor whether it can be corrected.

Dictionary definitions only go so far because of these subtle differences in usage - both English and Japanese. It is much better to define them as something with a clear difference, even if that does lose some minor aspect, to keep the meaning clear.
