Question about signing and braille - 07-11-2009, 10:54 PM

This may seem to be an odd question, but does the Japanese language have an equivalent of sign language (for deaf people) or Braille (for blind people) ? I don't know why, but I've been wondering that for a while.

During the nightly news where I lived in Kanagawa, there often was a lady on the side of the screen signing the news as someone else read the news. I think they called it 手話ニュース or something.

Examples of JSL: YouTube - かがやき手話ニュース「原 道子の自分史・第1章」
Warning: there are subtitles, but they're in Japanese, so you'd better be willing to pause or be a proficient reader already to follow what she's signing.
