Explanatory の/ん - Past tense - 07-07-2010, 09:40 AM

Hi all,

I'm trying to explain why something happened, and the reason is that I missed the last bus.
I'm stuck with where to suggest the past tense though. All explanatory の examples I can find just now are present tense.

Is it either:

終バスに乗り遅れるんだった
終バスに乗り遅れたんだ
終バスに乗り遅れたんだった?

Thanks And a ’Cheers’ in advance to Sashi no doubt

Is it either:

終バスに乗り遅れるんだった Very strange but grammatically not necessarily incorrect. It means that you had planned on missing the bus for some purpose.

終バスに乗り遅れたんだ Only this one is correct. It sounds even natural.

終バスに乗り遅れだったIncorrect. This one uses double-past.
