How many words should i learn a week? - 09-08-2010, 09:24 PM

Ive been learning japanese for a year now but ive seen people who have been learning for less time than me but still know many more words. I mean, i can get around with my japanese but im soooo hungry for more knowledge in the language. So how many words do you recommend i learn a week?

also if you want to practice speaking your japanese with natives or other learners i highly recommend this website:Language Exchange Community - Practice Foreign Languages

It does wonders! trust me...

1. find a copy of Kanji in Context—it won't be cheap, but it will be cheaper than a textbook
2. start cramming from the beginning at some pace you choose (say, 5 kanji's worth of words per day) using Anki on the computer
3. after a couple months, check to see how your long-term retention is doing (Anki tracks this)—if it's at least 80%, increase how many you do per day

I've added about 5000 vocabulary words in the past few months doing this. In the process, I've almost learned all the joyo kanji.
