Just wondered if anyone could tell me the meaning of Okonomi by itself without the yaki part at the end?

Is the literal translation "What You Like"?

What is the context? It can mean different things.

1. Many people around Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya call okonomiyaki "okonomi". I myself grew up calling it okonomi.

2. In certain restaurants, particularly high-end sushi places, you choose between Omakase and Okonomi. Former means "I'll leave it to you, chef. Throw me what you want me to eat." and the latter, "I will order what I want, one by one."

3. Just a polite way of sayng "what you like" in a situation where you must choose things. Last week, I bought a small present for a friend and my store clerk showed me several kinds of wrapping paper and asked me to choose　one. She said　お好みのものでお包みいたします。= I'll wrap it in what you like.

好む（このむ = konomu） = to like

好み（このみ = konomi） = liking. Add the honorific お and voila.
