Kanji tips - 11-29-2010, 10:08 AM

So, I only learned a little kanji and ended up forgetting it anyways, but i'm curious, what order should I learn in? What order did you use? How did you make it fun i guess? I use an electric flashcard thing.. along with writing them daily.. but i'm curious for more tips.

Learn them in context. Never try to learn random kanji in isolation. Not only are you not going to remember them if you do that, it's the quickest way for learners to start hating kanji and furthermore, the Japanese language.

"What can you write in kana so far?" is a key question you need to keep asking yourself. If you can't write something in kana, don't even worry about writing it in kanji.

If you can already write something like:
「にほんにはやまとかわがたくさんあります。」

Then you know it's an eyesore written all in kana. You want to replace some of the words used there by kanji. You start with the easiest ones (ones with fewest strokes.)

「にほんには山と川がたくさんあります。」 would already be much less of an eyesore. Then you wil go:

「日本には山と川がたくさんあります。」

At least, this is how Japanese kids learn to write kanji.

thanks so much, that's how I originally started, with the easiest ones, but of course, not using them made me forget, but the kana thing is really handy. Thank you.

For your reference, here is the list of kanji learned in each grade of the Japanese elementary school.

Hope it doesn't scare you too badly!
