Rosetta Stone

Has anyone tried learning Japanese via Rosetta Stone?

I tried it over the weekend, I am not sure what to say about the software, it seems to be very elaborate, but it lacks explanation. It appears that the software makes a lot of assumption

There's already several topics on the Rosetta Stone, they might be helpful to you:

Thanks, see the thing is, i know enough to get myself around japan, and I am ok with my Kanji (Of course, me being Chinese), a bit slow with my Katakana and Hiragana, but Ok.

The reason why I started using Rosetta Stone was because I want to improve in my overall Japanese language skill, but the problem is, the Level 1, 2, 3 setup doesn't quite work. I can't find a spot where I should start. I started with Level 2, thinking that level 1 maybe a bit too Junior base on my current Japanese ability, but then, there are things in level 2 thats too Junior, while there are also things that I don't already know.. so its difficult to just jump in.

I reverted back to Level 1, most of the material are too general, but there are also things thats new to me

I've seen this advertised, & how they say it makes learning the language easier. I found it at around $300 & thought this was quite expensive, as I was unsure just how easy it would be. No point paying so much if your going to remain stuck at the same point as learning without the programme.

I have used Rosetta stone, it's ok I guess. I think it's more suited for building up your vocabulary or something. I don't like however assume you know everything though, because a lot of the times you'll have to look up what stuff means online. You do learn some stuff though.

I'm using it, but only AFTER learning Pimsleur and going to some classes in a local language school. Many times while studying I asked myself "wow, how in the world would anyone without ANY language experience understand this?"

I think the "Hiragana learning" is so rushed, it's beyond all rhyme and reason, but apart from that I found it to be very useful (at least level 1)

In the links some peoples quoted that Rosetta Stone is good to practise our already known vocabulary and grammar, but it's not the greatest thing to start learning a language with it...

It looks they use too many difficult grammar rules, unneeded words and no "subtitles translation" at the start...

But in this case, I don't even know how do I'll learn Japanese...

There are about a million threads on JF telling how to start learning Japanese. There's a search function up top. Try it out.

Rosetta Stone Japanese?

If it is the same one I tried around 2 years ago then DESTROY IT WITH FIRE, the pretty flames are all it is worth. If you downloaded it then burn it to disk and MELTてください

PImsleur 1-3 on the other hand are great, only commerical product I would (consider) pay(ing) for (maybe)

Stuff like renshuu.org - welcome to renshuu.org: Japanese studying made for you! is so great for vocab I actually gave them a donation to go pro on it
