2 questions 1 culture 1 social understanding - 04-13-2007, 05:46 AM

First question!

My friends dad died not too long ago and being Japanese she was looking for an incense holder (or something like that?) but she didn't know the name of it... Anyone know what she's asking? I'm not familiar with traditional Japanese death rites (and neither is she). ><

Question #2!

What's the difference between "Shibaraku desu" and "Ohisashiburi desu"? How often would 1 use either and when?

Arigatou~

Can't help you much with the incense holder thing, but I can answer your other question.

shibaraku: for some time, awhile
e.g. shibaraku omachi kudasai. (Please wait for a while)
- This can be said by the store person to the customer whether in person or over the phone.
shibaraku deshita ne. (It has been a while..{since I last saw you})
- Said between friends.

ohisashiburi: after a long while/absense
e.g. ohisashiburi desu ne. (It has been ages since I last you, isn't it?)
- Basically, we use this phrase to greet someone that we have not met for a long time.
