山口弁についての質問 - 07-07-2011, 09:27 PM

I'm currently trying to translate (JP>EN) a short story for a competition. There is dialog spoken by someone from WWII-era Hongou, Yamaguchi. I have been able to find some help on Wikipedia-JA about Yamaguchi dialect oddities, but it hasn't solved everything.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no prohibition on asking for this type of help. I don't see it as being any different than asking a friend from Yamaguchi in person, which is not prohibited.

I'm hoping to get a bit of assistance from anyone who can parse Yamaguchi-ben.

In any case, here's what I'm having problems with (a bit of dialog)

「私と一緒に小浜へゆけや。」
and, later on,
「役場へいったら、チブスは法定伝染病やさかい、小浜 の隔離病院へつれてゆかないかんいうた。しかたない。 リヤカーにでもつんでゆかにゃ。汽車にはのせてくれん 。」

The first one seems to be "Go with me to Obama!" (spoken by a youngster, so less of a thick accent, I'm guessing)

The second one is more difficult. It's spoken by a 50+ year old man, so the accent is thicker. My attempt is:

If you go to the town hall, something about Cheves and an official disease, and not taking him the isolation ward of Obama City. Can't be helped. Something like "Even if by bicycle trailer I won't be stuffed in." Let me ride the steam train.

The real problem words are:
やさかい I know in 大阪弁, せやさかい=だから。関係があるでしょうか?
かんいうた
つんでゆかにゃ = 詰んでいかねば??
のせてくれん = 乗せてくれ! (??)

Thanks!

Edit やさかい has got to be や+さかい, where や=だ and さかい=から, right?

Hi.
I'm not from Yamaguchi prefecture, but I think I can understand.
I think most people in Japan can understand the dialect well, because we are accustomed to hear such dialects in TV dramas or movies, though we've never been to the place ourselves.
It's the same phenomena as we can understand the Edo era's Japanese, though there is no time-machine.

「私と一緒に小浜へ ゆけ(=行け) や。」
and, later on,

The real problem words are:
やさかい I know in 大阪弁, せやさかい=だから。関係があるでしょうか?
 あると思います。
せや さかい =そうで あるから、
や さかい =で あるから。

かんいうた --> いかんいうた
つんでゆかにゃ = 詰んでいかねば??  積んでいかないと
のせてくれん = 乗せてくれ! (??)  乗せて くれない。

Edit やさかい has got to be や+さかい, where や=だ and さかい=から, right?
  Yes. You're right.

My English try;
"Go to Obama with me."
"When I asked at the city office, the officer said that I must bring you to the isolation hospital in Obama, because typhoid is an official disease. We have no other choice.
I have to bring you there somehow, for example, by letting you ride on a two-wheeled cart.
They will not allow us to get on a train."

How about this version?
