Translation Help o3o - 07-26-2011, 06:23 PM

Konnichiwa minna! I am new to this forum and I was seeking out a place I can get help translating the following sentence into Japanese. I need the correct kanji and hiragana since the text is going to be a major part of a tattoo design for a friend who is commissioning me.

I do know Japanese but I am not fluent and I am out of practice for the past two years so I don't trust myself to translate this accurately, so it can't hurt to have someone check this for me ^w^ Arigatou!

"Descend from above, I am a gift from God."

"Ue ni kudaru, watashi wa Kami-sama no okurimono."

"上に下る、私は神さまの贈り物。"

Is this correct?

looks spot on to me.
the kanji is appropriate.
the phrase itself is a little obscure *descend from above* could be written differently depending on what is descending
and whether its a command
or if it is saying the "gift from god" person is doing the descending.

context could change it a little but with religious phrases like that they are actually kinda open to interpretation so if you have interpreted it how your friend feels it means then you've got no problems.

上に下がる makes no sense. に marks the target. This would mean "To descend to heaven", ie "to go down to what is above".
"From above" is 上から・上より. Although 天国・天・天界・空 &c. might me more appropriate according to context. And as for "descend", 降り立つ sounds much better. And you may want to consider "我", depending on how you want it to sound.
(eg 我は天界よりこの世に降り立ちた神様の贈り者なのだ! ) (with the pun between 贈り物 and 送られた者 intended...)

You cannot 下る to 上. Just physically impossible.

「私」 and 「神さま」 sound too weak (and even a little funny) for the context. Those are what a "regular" person would use, not someone who is declaring he is God's gift. I would opt for 「われ」 and 「神」, respectively.
____

And we Japanese-speakers never say "Konnichiwa minna!".
