kanji: Amazon.com: The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary (9784770028556): Jack Halpern: Books (until you're advanced, then you buy it's big brother)

words: buy an electronic dictionary; i haven't ever seen a physical J-E dictionary I thought was really all that good; I had the Random House when I was much younger. But with the Internet and electronic dictionary, I never needed a paper book. I have this, and it is excellent: Canon Wordtank G50 Japanese Dictionary

I Have that one. And after getting used to it it's vary useful. Especially with the various amount of ways to look words up. And not to forget the many examples they give for each word. I Just wish you could look through a list of alphabetically organized English words, the same way you could Romaji. I also find the Hiragana and Katakana Chartrs vary useful.

And just wait until you graduate to a very advanced level and use the book's big brother, NTC's New Japanese-English Character Dictionary (新漢字字典)! And then I guess eventually to a Japanese-only kanji dictionary. Although I have myself never dropped the $ on an only-Japanese tome.
