Question - 08-24-2011, 08:02 PM

Hello,

I am an female that will be travelling solo to Tokyo for 10 days and 8 nights in November. Can someone please help me with a language question?

If I go into a fast food restaurant, I *think* I will be asked if I want it to take away or to eat in? Can someone tell me how this question will be asked and what my proper replies should be?

(I can only read Romaji)

Thank you!

I am traveling to Tokyo in Nov as well!

I am not quite sure about your question specifically, but I do remember a lot of people asking in English.

Try not to eat in too many fast food restaurants, though! You can eat at those back home (unless you're dying to try a Japanese specific like MOS, or something).

You will most likely hear the word お持ち帰り (which is "take out"—literally something like "have and return [home]").

For here or to go?=O-mochikaeri desuka? Kochira de o-meshiagari ni narimasuka?/Kochira de o-meshiagari desuka?

For here.=Kokode tabemasu.(I'll eat here)
To go.=Motte kaerimasu.(I'll take it out)

FYI: Some places people speak really politely, so if that's the case listen for them to say "meshi agari" (to eat) and then you reply with the "Koko de" (for here) or "mochi kaeri" (take away).

People in Tokyo, especially restaurant staff, are pretty used to non-Japanese speaking foreigners so it shouldn't be too difficult.
