unisex J-names? - 10-16-2011, 06:53 PM

In English there are some 'uni-sex' names that can be given to a boy or a girl, such as Kim, Rory, Ash, in fact here's a whole list of less-commonly known ones;
Behind the Name: English Unisex Names

It just occurred to me, what -if any- are some of the more common, interesting, or picturesque Japanese uni-sex names?

I mean, ones that can be used -completely unchanged- for the actual given name of either a boy or a girl?

And is this very common in Japan, or extremely uncommon?

I can't read kanji, so please don't answer in that.
If you like, I can read Hiragana or Romaji.

Thank you.

はるか
うしお
そら can also be the name of a boy, but in most cases I've seen, it's a girl's name.

Is Naomi a Japanese?
Even if it isn't, it can be spelt easily in Japanese.

植村直巳(うえむらなおみ=Naomi Uemura)
Naomi Uemura - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Naomi is usually a girl's name in Japan, spelled like 直美、尚美、奈緒美、直己、etc... I don't think it's a typical Japanese name though.

う、うしお・・?

Back when I was watching Clannad, there was an episode when the main character said to his wife that they should name their child Ushio, so it would work whether their it's a girl or a boy. I don't know how it is in real life though.

Not to mention the most famous ナオミ of all, the woman in the novel 知人の愛 by 谷崎潤一郎! But that character was named that as a reference to the Western name. I wonder if the name existed as a Japanese name before the novel came about! My wife's name (Jessica) didn't exist until Shakespeare invented it.

Ah, yes I know. I've read 「痴人の愛」. I meant to say Naomi has now become one of common names usually used for girls in Japan.
