Writing Kanji small.

When Japanese people write small. Do they use Kanji? For example 看護士 the 護 is giving me trouble. I can write 護 but I cant write it small. In this situation do Japanese have so much experience with Kanji that they can squeeze the strokes into small space, or do they use Kana?
