Difference between the ways of saying brat/child? - 01-03-2012, 12:07 PM

When reading or listening to a lot of Japanese material to build vocabulary. I come across these terms when referring to children many times ガキ, 小僧. or 小童.

My general understanding is that they mean "brat" or something in that direction. However it is not exacly clear to me in what context you use it.

For example if two people refer to same child but one uses ガキ but other uses 小僧. Is ガキ the more derogatory term or just the more commonly used one? Like in English, the term "brat" is used more than "rascal" but mean the same thing more or less.

Maybe someone with a better understanding of the language could help me.
