the characters of hiragana.... - 06-21-2007, 04:31 AM

Japanese language consists of three systems of writing, Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji (Kanji consists of 1,945 joyo kanji which if you're a gajin and learning the language, will take you a while to master).

Hiragana is the first system of writing learned by Japanese children. Essentially there are 46 characters and for each character a phonetic corresponds with it. Everything else learned in Hiragana is based off the initial 46 characters you learn. When I learned Hiragana, there were simple words that started with the character I learned. The words were written using the script of Hiragana; romaji (Japanese written using the English alphabet) was also provided along with the English translation.

I've mastered Hiragana but in order to learn more new Kanji (I know about 100 which is mediocre to me...only 5% of the total joyo kanji) I've found and copied the kanji for the initial 46 words I learned along with the Hiragana.

I'm going to post the kanji along with the hiragana. If anybody who is learning Hiragana wants to learn the rest of the script, I'll provide those as well. Let me know, and if majority rules, then I'll post the other parts of the
script of Hiragana on a separate post, but on this thread.

*PLEASE NOTE:What the meaning of the word is, depends on the context it's being used in. This applies to any language, not just Japanese. May sound like an obvious point to bring up, but that's why I included and/or in words that have more then one meaning even though the same romaji, hiragana characters, or kanji are used for them.

Please note also that Japanese is well known for having many homophones in the language (homophone=words that sound the same but maybe spelled differently and have different meanings; ex: sea and see)
