Well not every name means something, specially if it ain't originally Japanese.

Chireru 07-09-2007 11:44 AM

well, its just that, all of my friends who have found out their japanese names, have meanings
and, idk if its originally japanese or not, but its just my american name translated

some japanese names don't have a meaning. some, like urs, are transliterated from english and are written in katakana (in ur case, チレル)and are just cool to say.

it would help if you had the kanji for that since each kanji has a specific meaning. some names could be written a hundred different ways (and therefore a hundred different meanings) but still be pronounced the same.

for example, your name, "chireru" could be written a many ways if you choose random kanji. each syllable would be a different kanji. "chi" could be written 千 meaning "1000," 智 meaning "wisdom," 恥 meaning "shame", etc. The "re" could be 黎 meaning "darkness," 玲 a kind of sound, etc. there's billions of possibilities.

that's why it would by kind of hard to extract a meaning from names merely by their pronunciation- i don't know how ur friends did it. go ask them.

and 82riceballs said exactly what I would have said with a lot more.
I know that my name in japanese is コミシカ and it has no meaning whatsoever that I know of.
my real names especially don't. During first year of japanese class my sensei kept getting onto me for pronouncing my last name the way it is written in katakana because it is not japanese and since I am not japanese I should not pronounce it that way and only let japanese people pronounce it that way becuase it is expected of them to do so.
