How about Random House in paperback? Or perhaps you may want to consider an electronic dictionary. Casio makes excellent ones.

Since you requested for a small and handy dictionary, I suggest you check out these two:
1] SANSEIDO'S - Daily concise English-Japanese dictionary
2] THE KODANSHA PAX - Japanese-English dictionary

I am currently using these two for quick referals as they are very compact in size[ 3 1/4" x 6 1/4"] and concise in content. They may not be the best as I have others, some are real big and bulky ones, but these two, I used to bring them around in my bag for convenience.
