If you're just wanting to know simple short phrases then you shouldn't have too much trouble. Just find a good book and study up a bit.

Hello-Ohayoo Gozaimasu for mornings, Konnichiwa for afternoons, Konbanwa for nighttime, moshi moshi for answering the phone.
Goodbye-Jaa mata, Sayonara (used for when you're parting for a longer a period of time, like if you won't see them till the next day.)
Thank you-Domo would be like thanks, Arigatou is like thank you and Arigatou Gozaimasu is like a more formal thank you.

I'm sure that someone else could explain it all better. I believe that the thread Nihongo de Asobo has some useful phrases now that I think about it.

I wouldn't be expecting too much help, here. Can you take a Japanese 1 class? The more time invest now in getting to know the language, the better the experience is going to be for you.

The best ways to prepare are (by ranking)

1) Get into a class.
2) Get a tutor who you meet with on a regular schedule.
3) An online class
4) Check japanese community center websites for free classes
5) buy a text book and try to teach your self
6) come to Japan Forum and ask someone to teach you

If you are living there, the main thing you are going to want to know is SPEAKING and LISTENING. You should learn HIRAGANA and KATAKANA, but don't feel like you need to learn all the kanji, 'cause you can't. That takes a lifetime. Basically I would invest more time in SPEAKING and LISTENING than in READING and WRITING for starters.

Try to get Rosetta stone, it's the best for learning any language. ^_^
And if you can't afford that get Japanese for Dummies they teach you everything in those books, because unlike other books which just teach you VERY proper Japanese(which isn't bad) it teaches you the different ways you can say things to different people depending on the level of authority they have(parents, teachers, friends, ect.) which is very useful. It also teaches you their culture and beliefs. For example, if someone were to compliment you in america you would say "Thank you." and move on with your day, but in Japan it is more polite to turn down the compliment no matter if it is true or not.
Say someone said "You are a good cook." You would reply "No, I am no near as good as you." or something to that effect. ^_^
It's a really good book, it's what I used and it got me pretty far. But a computer program like Rosetta stone is the best.
Also try to watch japanese movies with english subtitles and listen to the words carefully and try to translate them yourself.
