Japanese letter ettiquite

Hello / Konnichi wa

This is a follow-up question related to one I posted a week or so ago.

I have a card/letter that I would like to address to several individuals. What is the protocol for doing this? For example, in English, instead of saying Mr. Smith, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Black", we would say "Messrs. Smith, Johnson, and Black:"

There are 7 recipients of this card. I was hoping to show them all respect by including their names on my card. However, I don't want it to look silly! How should this be handled?

"Hashimoto-san, san, yamamoto-san, tanaka-san, morimoto-san,"

Finally, is there a salutation I should use? (e.g. Dear ... )

Thank you!

In traditional and sincere manner of writing letter, the receiver is supposed to be only one. Multiple receivers are not assumed.

If you stick to the traditional and sincere manner, you should prepare multiple cards for the receivers.

Or, you can send a card in casual manner of modern e-mail syle listing the receivers names at the heading.

In your previous post, you wrote "敬具" at the end of the letter. Please be informed that "敬具" needs corresponding "拝啓" before (and after the receiver's name) the letter.

For western people, Japan and other Asian countries are actually another planet. There will be many new things for western people.

Because western lifestyles are well known to Asian people, the culture gaps western people feel are much more than the gaps Asian people in western.

After some decades, these gaps will be balanced. It is good times for western people to visit Asia.
