Help with a line of dialogue - 04-18-2017, 07:29 AM

Hi!

I don't speak Japanese, but I have recently started watching Anime.

I recently saw a trailer that didn't have any English subtitles so I created a sub file with intention of sending it to the uploader.

People in the comments helpfully provided translations but I'm stuck on one line of dialogue

あたしが許せねえのはな、そういう訳の分かんねえ理由 で他人にヤッパを向けるやつだよ。

I am hoping it will be simple for someone who speaks English and Japanese to say "Ah! She's saying x"

Commenters gave this translation:

I just can't forgive people who turn to others for reasons they don't understand.
Does she mean she can't forgive people who turn to others with problems they don't understand?
Google Translate (sorry) gave this translation:

I can not forgive you, it 's the one who turns the trumpet to another person for reason not to understand such translation.

After a couple of hours I broke it down into:

そういう such (Sōiu)
訳 reason (wake)
の of (no)
分かんねえ not understanding (wakan'nē)
理由 reason (riyū)
で (de)
他人 strangers (tannin)
に into (ni)
ヤッパ "I knew it!" (yappa)

向ける face/turn towards
やつだ stranger (possibly of illegitimate birth) (yatsuda)
よ。(yo)

The lack of spaces to indicate individual words made it time consuming to break down. But I still fail to get the gist of this line now that I have broken it down.

I hope it's not to difficult! Thank you very much!

Anifan

You can find my sub file (.srt) and the trailer (.mp4) below, you will need to download both and play them in VLC or something that supports subtitles.

When the subs are finished I will merge the sub file into the trailer file to create one file.

Sub file here: http://tinyurl.com/muoaqvx

Trailer file here: http://tinyurl.com/m3evagf

It was on YouTube but Sony doesn't want the publicity apparently - they have pulled the trailer?? zen zen wakara nai as they say... Well I guess they'll be a choice of seats at the cinema, ne?

>ヤッパ "I knew it!" (yappa)

Wrong. In this case, ヤッパ means some kind of blade (knife or sword) to kill. This is the reason why it is written in KATAKANA.

"ヤッパ:YAPPA" is the word used only in the dark side of Japan. I have never heard this word in my real life.

Google translator misunderstand YAPPA as RAPPA (trumpet).

My translation is .....

I can not forgive the guy who turns swords to other person with such crazy reasons.

Thank You - 04-18-2017, 04:34 PM

Thank you RadioKid

Thank you very much for replying so quickly.

I was never going to get that because I still don't know what she's talking about! But that's not important.

Thank you for helping me

The fact that I mistook やっぱ for an abbreviation of やっぱり didn't help either!

"to turn a sword to a person" means "to kill the person".

She simply urged why she is so angry with the guy.

Ah! Thanks RadioKid for following up.

Turning a sword to a guy sounded like a threat to me.

So my subtitle should be:

"I can't forgive a guy who kills for crazy reasons"

would that be accurate?

If you have a moment could I ask you for your opinion on this line?

あなたもあなたで、誰と一緒の時も隠し事ばっかりね。

I subbed it as "Everything's a secret to you isn't it?" but a literal translation might be "You are secretive with everyone."

...I am just a little curious to know why she said anata twice. Is "Anata mo anata de" some kind of colloquial phrase?

Sincerely

Anifan

There's a transcript here if you are interested: https://wiki.puella-magi.net/ Youtube has taken down the Film Trailer now so I'm just subbing this out of interest and not for any purpose.

No, unfortunately."YAPPA(YAIBA) WO MUKERU:to turn a sword to a person" is a idiom to threat (or express murderous intent) someone and does not mean "kill" itself.

>あなたもあなたで、誰と一緒の時も隠し事ばっかりね

"You always hide something behind with whomever."

"ANATA MO ANATA DE" is used when comparing some other person. Usually someone is blamed before referring "you". You can translate it as "You are also to be blamed" or else.
